Two men suspected to be cattle thieves were brutally killed on the night between Thursday and Friday at Chatata Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Chitukula in Lilongwe.
Bodies of the two were found on Friday morning with their throats cut open near the railway that passes through the village.
Kanengo Police Public Relations Officer, Sub. Insp. Esther Mkwanda, identified the two as Hanock Chavunga, 42, of Mkandawakuda Village, and Liston Khongo, 29, of Chamanga Village, both from TA Chimutu, Lilongwe.
She told Malawi News Agency that the two, whose bodies were not identified until Saturday, were believed to have been killed by unknown people on suspicions that they had attempted to steal cattle from the village.
“The two men had ropes in their bags which we found lying next to their respective bodies,” explained Mkwanda, adding, “Besides; Liston Khongo once served a 2-year jail term at Maula Prison from 2013 to 2015 for the offence of theft of cattle.”
No arrests have been made so far in connection to the murder of the two and, according to Mkwanda, investigations are still underway.
When apprehended the assailants of Chavunga and Khongo will answer charges of murder, which is contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code and it attracts a maximum sentence of death.-Mana
