A project that has been initiated by German and South African nationals in partnership with Nkhotakota Pottery Lodge in Nkhotakota is to benefit Malawians in the district as it will provide local farmers a chance to sell their produce to the lodge.
This was revealed during meeting that took place at Nkhotakota Pottery Lodge in the district.
The project will involve local people cultivating rice and cropping vegetables through irrigation and selling the locally produced products to Nkhotakota Pottery and Lodge.
People in the communities will also have a chance to access cheap farm produce such as vegetables, rice, and milk.
According to the coordinator of the initiative Mr Symon who is a German, the project will benefit people in Nkhandwe village, Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota.
“The initiative will also strengthen the relationship that is there between the company and the community, they have to benefit from us and the only way to do that is equipping them with modern farming skills,” said Simeon.
He added that people in the area will be allowed to sell various products like fish to the lodge that will enable the fishermen to source money and the lodge to cut costs on transportation.
Speaking at the same meeting, one of the attendees Stambuli Aim described the meeting as productive since locally produced products will have a readily available market.
Beneficiaries of the project described the move as important since they will gain skills on how to grow vegetable such as tomatoes and onion.
One of the beneficiaries Mrs Chisisili said people in the village of Nkhandwe will also be earning money after selling the produce to the company.
“The initiative will really create a note between us and the company, apart from benefiting income after selling the vegetables we will also adopt skills that will help us throughout our lives,” she said.
