Shovel thief rescued from angry mob

Police at Chinsapo Township in Lilongwe on Friday rescued a 20 year-old man from an angry mob that wanted to burn him to ashes for stealing shovels.

Police have identified the man as Chimwemwe Steven, who was accused of stealing four shovels from some residents who were mining sand in Lilongwe River in the area.

According to police, the suspect sneaked to the river and stole the items as the miners were relaxing elsewhere.

“The suspect was apprehended shortly after making off, inciting the irate mob into justice,” police said.

The mob dragged him up to Chinsapo 1 bus stage and heaped some dry grass and plastic bags on him, ready to burn him.

But officers from Chinsapo police rushed to the scene after being tipped by well-wishers and shot a single bullet into the air.

The gunshot scared and dispersed the mob who expressed anger at the police.

Meanwhile Steven is in police custody awaiting court appearance. He hails from Mkhwayi village, Traditional Authority Kadewere in Chiradzulu District.
