‘No salary increment for Malawi’s civil servants’

Just as civil servants were getting excited about a reported 15 percent salary increment, the Malawi government has come in quickly to burst their bubble by announcing that there will be no such increase.

In a statement released by Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, government has said that reports of a salary hike for all civil servants are not correct.

Government however has claimed that it is still committed to increasing salaries of all civil servants but at the meantime it will only be junior civil servants who will benefit from a raise.

According to the statement, the salaries of the junior workers in the civil service will be increased by 18.3 percent.

“The increment (18.3 percent) will only be applicable to junior civil servants. It is therefore incorrect to allege that government has backtracked on its earlier proposal to give pay hike to only junior servants after parliamentary approval.”

“It is further incorrect to allege that government has given pay hike across the board,” reads part of the statement.

The refutation will likely anger civil servants in the country who got excited by reports of the hike.

After reports of the hike came out, Malawi Congress of Trade Union (MCTU) secretary general Pontius Kalichero hailed the salary adjustment as a good development considering the hard times the country is going through.

Teaching from the heart makes us to teach even during aftrnoon hours with no payments coz we realise kut munthu akhale lawyer, nurse, doctor, whatever, its because of a teacher. It follows that teaching its all about calling. Therefore we are not fools but we do this because of your impairment!!!
