The Zomba high court has today granted bail to 27 Chancellor College students who were arrested during and after demonstrations at the college, Malawi24 can confirm.
The students together with the president of the students union were arrested for being suspected to have participated in demonstrations against fees hike and they are to answer charges of causing violence.
According to information made available to this publication, the Zomba high court has granted bail to all the students who got arrested.
Malawi24 understands that that each of the released is supposed to pay K10, 000 as a bond and all the student have been told to report to their nearest police station every Friday.
Another condition is that they should not commit any similar offence during the period of the trial.
Chanco Students Union president James Ayuba Sylvester plus the other 26 students got arrested for being suspected to have caused violence following the protests the students conducted over government’s decision to hike fees.
The students were protesting against the stand by the University council not to rescind the decision of fees hike for both generic and mature students which was announced a few weeks ago.
The university has since been sealed.
