Man who raped teenager gets 12 years

A 21 year-old man who raped a 15 year-old girl in order to initiate her has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

The Kasungu first grade magistrate court meted out the punishment to the rapist Lucius Phiri on Wednesday.

Prior to sentencing, state prosecutor Mariot Kamaliza asked the magistrate to give Phiri a stiff punishment to deter would be offenders.

CourtKamaliza said being a schoolgirl, the victim is psychologically traumatised and this could affect her performance in school.

According to Kasungu police deputy public relations officer Harry Namwaza, Phiri raped the girl at her parents’ house on 13 May, 2016 in Umphawiuwawa village in the area of Traditional Authority Mphomwa in the district.

On the day of the incident, the victim was preparing to go to school and when she was coming from the bathroom she met the convict who told her that he wanted initiate her but the girl refused.

Phiri however grabbed the girl and sexually abused her.

“After Lucius had finished his act, the victim found a chance and shouted for help, this sent shudders in the suspect who started running away but he was apprehended by some community members who brought him to Kasungu police station,” said Namwaza.
Lucius Phiri hails from Magwalagwala village in Traditional Authority Wimbe in Kasungu district.
