Woman commits suicide in Lilongwe

A 77 year-old woman Kapanda village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Malili in Lilongwe committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree in a maize garden, police say.

Lilongwe Police Station Public Relations Officer (PRO) Inspector Kingsley Dandaula identified the deceased as Ketrina Kamitondo.

Death hangingHe said the woman was last seen alive on 15th March, 2016 when she left her home.

Seven days later, she was found dead after she used a Chitenje cloth to hang herself in the middle of a maize garden.

“The deceased was staying with her relatives and it was on Tuesday 22nd March at around 10am when members of the general public found her hanging dead from a tree in the middle of a maize garden with her legs and arms decomposed,” he said.

The matter was reported to police who took the body to Kamuzu Central Hospital and post-mortem results revealed that her death was due suffocation.

Police have since bemoaned the increase of suicide cases of mentally challenged persons and have called on families, parents and guardians to provide special care to people who are mentally challenged to avoid such incidences.

The woman hailed from Mpumbulu Kutchemba village, T/A Malili in Lilongwe.
