Mutharika: Been asked to step down.

Reports reaching Malawi24 news desk indicate that Jessie Kabwila, spokesperson for opposition Malawi Congress Party, has been arrested for sedition over remarks she made during the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) stakeholders’ conference which cited the need for Malawians to impeach President Peter Mutharika.

While Malawi24 could not independently verify the arrest with the police, other reports indicate that Kabwila has been in hiding after she got tipped that she would be attacked by people who were on the spree to silence Mutharika’s critics. The attackers were reportedly sent by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration.

Some reports from close sources also say that Kabwila has been arrested because she was part of a group of MCP officials who were plotting insurrection for regime change in a leaked Whatsapp conversation. The group also included Louis Chakhwantha and Ulemu Msungama and their discussion allegedly centred on inciting protest actions and work stoppages.

“What are we doing as MCP to deal with this stupid DPP administration and its President? In the last DPP regime, things were bad but we made Malawians to fight back,” reads one of the messages on the group.

Another contributor said Mutharika can be taken down, just using ‘The Mubarak Egypt style’.

The remarks Kabwila made after the PAC meeting in Blantyre which championed the calls for Mutharika to step down have been talk of town and have been making rounds on the media.

Ironically the calls come barely weeks after reports Malawi24 has carried revealed that the MCP has been pushing hard to oust Mutharika over what they claim is failure to lead the nation.

Mutharika was also asked to axe some of his Ministers who the MCP feel are ineffective.

But the Malawi leader has incessantly said that his government will not politically prosecute anyone.
