Malawi Government says climate change and environmental degradation are affecting the manufacturing industry in the country.
Spokesperson for the ministry of industry and trade Wiskes Nkombezi said environmental degradation in the Shire River – the main water source for power generation by Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) – has led to low power supply, affecting the country’s manufacturing industry.
“Environmental degradation is destructive as it has affected the manufacturing industry as siltation is at a large scale in Shire River, affecting power supply,” said Nkombezi.
He added that the erratic rains in most parts of the country are a result of climate change.
However, Nkombezi said government has created a conducive environment for investors to come and invest in the energy sector.
He said: “There are more investors who are willing to invest in the energy sector and we are convinced that the sector is going in the right direction.”
No hope 4 malawians
Climate degradation and climate change are two different things. In Malawi’s case is degradation which is self inflicted due to poor management of natural resources since the commencement of this so called ‘Democracy’.
What is this government talking about?.. I thought one of the major DPP’s objectives Is industrial growth.. So should we say you never knew that industries contribute to climate change or or the objectives are just for decorations!
Its the same gvt that allows escom to raise electricity charges while the country experiences persitent blackouts. It dicourages its citizens to use charcoal and wood while not giving people other cheap alternateves of sources of energy 4 cooking hence fueling the so called degradation.Gvt should make sure that every citizen has an access to electricity and at a cheaper price so that everybody cooks using electricity and then impose tougher measures 4 those involved in the degradation of forestry resources. If that will never b achieved, believe m forests in mw will at one time extinct!
yes that’s true but what about in other countries. should we say its only here in Malawi. no! misokhoso too much bola la Malawi. too much.
Malawi has got only Agricultural manufacturing companies compared to real Factories.
This again applies to Job scares to nationals.
Malawi has got more Agricultural Estates which employs seasonal workers as a result of the end of rainy seasons they are retrenched leaving them empty stomach to feed, clothe and educate their children.
From Nsanje to Chitipa and Mchinji to Mulanje/Thyolo manufacturing companies are very slim which would keep many people for long time at work as a result they ( Skilled, Graduates, and even farmers immigrates abroad leaving Malawi skill less.
Poor planing and hungry leadership leads to down fall if Malawi.
The truth is always bitter don’t forget this.
Selfishness of Malawi administration leadership will cost Malawi so dearly.
Believe me or not.
Why the whole Malawi Energy source is being berated in the South (Nkula) and Central (Tedzani)?
From ur Geographical understanding Northern Region has got no any big water falls compared to those two beloved regions?
The founders if Malawi Congress Party from the North handed all infrastructure designs to Hearings K. Banda on Rods, Energy and capital transfer from Zomba to central region between Dowa and Lilongwe, but Banda denied and accepted on capital transferring to Lilongwe in 1973.
Nkula falls was designed to serve South and Tedzani for Centre and what about the North?
Someone has to think deep on how Malawi’ energy would balance instead of relaying only on one source of River.
Nepotism, brutal selfishness, race and tribalism is killing Malawi.
I challenge you Mr. Minister that take a swipe visit and identify Chiwandama Falls on Lweya River, North/South Rukulu and Wovwe u will be surprised.
Nkula and small Tedzani won’t supply enough Energy to feed Malawi consumption.
Remember again Malawi has got one type of power Energy and that is Domestic.
Hiring Power from Mozambique as Joyce Banda did would really put Malawi on the map,
What a shame now 53yrs old this coming July06 2016, but no concrete plans just buffering Dinars/Aids.
Yes we anderstand dat de gorvernment is complaning about de climate change but wat have they done concerning about dis issue? Complaning is not de way to slve dis issue but taking action.
i think its now a high time to take issues of climate change more than serious, we should take this into reality, Government Need To Develop New Strategy Especially One That Is Targeting rural dwellers; lets discuss more….
