Malawi Government says climate change and environmental degradation are affecting the manufacturing industry in the country.

Spokesperson for the ministry of industry and trade Wiskes Nkombezi said environmental degradation in the Shire River – the main water source for power generation by Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) – has led to low power supply, affecting the country’s manufacturing industry.

“Environmental degradation is destructive as it has affected the manufacturing industry as siltation is at a large scale in Shire River, affecting power supply,” said Nkombezi.

He added that the erratic rains in most parts of the country are a result of climate change.

However, Nkombezi said government has created a conducive environment for investors to come and invest in the energy sector.

He said: “There are more investors who are willing to invest in the energy sector and we are convinced that the sector is going in the right direction.”
