Busted! Malawi Corrupt Traffic Police Officer demands bribes

Corruption continues to haunt Malawi as a local traffic police officer has been caught on camera receiving a bribe from a white man at an undisclosed roadblock.

The identity of the officer is not yet known, neither is that of the foreigner since the video clip that has gone viral on social network does not reveal their faces.

The 36 second long clip shows a white man sitting on a passenger’s seat while talking to the officer through a fully opened window. Then he gives an amount of K7000 to the law enforcer in exchange for an envelope that is understood to contain documents that can allow the white man to travel without any hindrances.

From the look of things, a person driving the white man does not have a driving licence which forced the traffic to hold them.

“Is this how you pay a bribe in Malawi?” asks the white man, to which the officer responds with a “yes”. Then the Malawian civil servant asks the white man to make sure that a licence is processed for the driver.

The clip has attracted a myriad views from Facebook users. People have slammed the officer for engaging in such an uncalled for act.

  11. Salary hike cannot change one’s mindset. If we talk of comfortable government department it’s immigration. People should first know their rights and what they are paying for. One pays for an ordinary passport and bribes the officer to get it within a week? It takes two to tangle. And you pay for an express passport you find the window period has expired you take them to task. It’s your right. My dear country men, work up, don’t allow people to take you for granted. This spirit of Luke worm altitude/humbleness is what is killing us.

  109. This was a plot. The one taking the camera in this case Mzungu new what he was doing and the poor officer did not know anything. The driver and Mzungu planned to have no license not that they did not have it but to fulfil their agenda. In this case the one giving a bribe also has a case to answer.
