Aspirants for parliamentary and local government seats in Phalombe district have vowed to take authorities to task on matters of health and mining after May 21 this year.

Aspirants during the debate

They said this during a debate organised by Development Communications Trust (DCT) in partnership with OXFAM held at Nazombe Primary School ground in the district on Thursday morning.

The aspirants took different questions on how they shall make sure that people should be getting adequate healthcare without facing difficulties once voted into power in the May 21 tripartite polls.

Mining was also on the agenda mainly focusing on mining which is currently being done at Songwe Hill in the district and the aspirants told people how they shall ensure that communities around Mkango mine are benefiting.

Extractives Industry Coordinator for OXFAM in Malawi, Elyvin Nkhonjera, said they organised the debate with the aim that the aspirants should tell people on what they shall do once voted into power mainly on issues of improving quality health services for people and mining.

“Since 2014 OXFAM has been working with DCT as well as CEPA in mining governance and also health governance so looking at the way we have been doing we saw that there are so many issues which come in these two items.

“So we thought that this is the best time to engage the aspirants so that when they go into power it shall be easy for us with members of the communities in tracking them to whatever they were telling the gathering here,” she said.
