The National Statistics Office (NSO) is yet to pay some of the enumerators who participated in this year`s population and housing census, over a month after the exercise was concluded.
Malawi24 has learnt that enumerators who were assigned to control centres number 11 and 12 are still awaiting their final honoraria.
The concerned parties have confided in this publication that officials of the responsible organisation trivialize their grievances whenever contacted. One of the affected enumerators who opted for anonymity said, NSO`s public relations officer Kingsley Manda went as far as blocking him on WhatsApp because he reminded him about his payment.
“NSO has been playing hide and seek on the matter and we are tired of such tricks. Why are they treating us as beggars?” asked one concerned enumerators.
Last week, Manda assured some of the enumerators that they were going to get paid by Friday. He explained the delay as a result of an error that saw the control centres in question missing on the list.
Enumerators are supposed to get K120, 000 for the job. They already received a similar sum for training allowances.
The census workers have since lost confidence in the organisation which also delayed the first honoraria for some people, albeit the statistics body alluded the delay to account errors.
