The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says it has registered about 735,000 people in phase seven of the voter registration process.

In the phase, the commission has registered 735,764 voters against a projection of 905,780 in all the councils representing 81 percent.

A total of 428,005 voters are women while 307,758 voters are men. The total registered voters for the phase is 90 percent against the 2014 registered voters which was 814,974.

The figures were released on Thursday during a press briefing which Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) conducted at Central Information Offices in Lilongwe.

Addressing members of the press, Commissioner Jean Mathanga said they have seen the trend starting from the first phase and they have been wondering why more women are coming out to register than men.

Mathanga explained that after conducting research, MEC acknowledged that some people are not registering since they think they put wrong people in positions.

She suggested that the women are showing interest with the aim of taking part in the registration process in order to choose more women in different positions.

“Although it is the case, we have managed to cover the 7 phases and will continue to mobilise people through awareness campaign using drama groups, music festivals, among others,” she explained

On the issue of transport, the commissioner said the issue has been alleviated after the Malawi Defence Force came to their rescue with 30 vehicles which will be used by the officers to go the registration centres.

The 8th phase which is the last phase starts today in NkhataBay, Likoma, Mzuzu and Mzimba.

Malawi Electoral Commission started voter registration on June, 2018 and the exercise will run up to 9 November 2018.
