Mozambican Police arrested Malawian fishermen for fishing on Mozambican waters on Lake Malawi.
The 60 fishermen were arrested last week and the Mozambican authorities also confiscated the fishermen’s fishing gear.
According to reports, the fishermen were released last weekend following the intervention of Malawian authorities.
However, seven boats confiscated by the Mozambicans have not been returned to the fishermen.
Mozambique says the fishing gear will be given back to the fishermen once they pay a K5 milllion fine meted on them for illegally using the Mozambican waters.
Lake Malawi is located between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. Mozambique owns a portion of the lake whose shoreline is in its borders while Malawi owns the rest of the lake.

If Mozambique think they can control our own water by aŕresting innocent people .they just want war.. we can give them war if they will not take this as Serious crime arresting Malawian Citizens..there is nothing that show s Lake malawi i shared ..they can check on the map ..we are the one supposed to arrest them for using our lake..

It’s not about weakness, it’s about missing understanding there is no demarcation in the water how u going to know that you are in Malawi side or Mozambique?
The three countries Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambiqueneed to strengthen their policies regarding management and sharing the Lake Malawi resources. We can’t continue thinking that Lake Malawi belongs only to Malawi. Am sure there are regulations and policies in place between Mozambique and Malawi regarding fishing and other activities in the Lake and both countries have to observe. The runoff water contributing to the Lake Malawi is as follow: 42.6%, 52.9% and 4.5% from Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique respectively. Therefore more than half of surface runoff comes from Tanzania. If for instance Tanzania decide to control its runoff to The Lake by constructing dams, the level of water in the Lake may drop considerably as consequence the biodiversity in the Lake may be affected to some extend as well as the Shire river and its hydropower production, this could trigger a disaster for Malawi. The Likoma and Chizumulu islands are within Mozambican side of the Lake, we never had noise about it. Let’s share the Lake resources accordingly and our governments should put in place fear policies that will benefit people from both riparian countries and avoid unnecessary conflicts.
