Renowned Malawian musician Lucius Banda says he will contest against Atupele Muluzi at the convention of the United Democratic Front (UDF).

Lucius Banda, who is also member of Parliament for Balaka North, said he is confident of defeating Atupele to the ticket of UDF’s torchbearer during the 2019 presidential elections.

“I will contest against Atupele Muluzi to save UDF” Lucius Banda, widely known as Soldier, told one of the local papers.

He however revealed that he is willing to stand down if Atupele ends the UDF/DPP alliance forged in 2014.

“If Atupele comes out of the DPP relationship, then I will support him. I am just observing what is happening at the moment. And, if he is not clear about his position with DPP, then I will contest against him” he stated, claiming he is duty bound to save UDF.

According to published reports, Peter Mutharika plans to replace Saulos Chilima with Atupele Muluzi as a running mate for the 2019 presidential race.
