A 14 year-old girl has died after a vehicle hit her while she was playing with her friend of the same age in Dowa.
Dowa Police Public Relations Officer Richard Kaponda has identified the girl as Rozita Khumalo.
According to Kaponda, the accident happened on Sunday when the motor vehicle registration number BLK 9499 Mazda Bongo driven by Frank Kamwaza was coming from the direction of Salima heading towards Lilongwe with six passengers on board.
Upon arrival at Mawelu trading centre, the vehicle hit the girl who was crossing the road from left to right while running without checking her safety.
“She was being chased by her friend, who was playing with her along the road. Due to the impact she sustained severe head injuries, and she died on the way to Salima District Hospital,” said Kaponda.
Postmortem conducted by health officials at Salima District Hospital revealed that the girl died due to head injuries.
Police in Dowa have since advised members of the general public to take a leading role in caring for children so that they should avoid playing along the road.
The deceased hailed from Maitano village Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District.
