Malawi govt under fire! Ex-MYPs angry over compensation delay

Former members of the Malawi Young Pioneers (MYP) have expressed anger over government’s failure to give them their compensations.

In 2015, the Malawi government promised 3000 former MYP members that t`hey will get compensation money for losing their jobs but up to the date none of the people has received the money.

Spokesperson of the group Grey Chisale said this is not a good development considering the work which the young pioneers did before the group was disarmed.

He also faulted government for being silent on the matter, saying the most painful thing is that the government officials have stopped having discussions with them on the issue and do not even answer their phone calls.

“We wrote them asking for our compensations, we were assured that all will be done accordingly and the government started registering all the retired pioneer soldiers but as I am speaking, nothing tangible has been done.

“Some weeks ago we sent some people to the office of the president and cabinet to check the progress of the matter with Mr Chiluzi the one who got appointed to be in charge of the matter but we felt so pity with his remarks where he said he has the right to do his assignment any time,” worried Chisale.

The publicist further suspected that the matter now is politically motivated and he wondered why Chiluzi is challenging them in such a way.

Meanwhile, they have warned that they will hold protests if government fails to meet their request by this coming September.

The MYP was a youth wing that was established by President Kamuzu Hastings Banda in 1963.

Without MYP Malawi could have failed to achieve some of it vital sectors such as Agriculture, Infrastractural development, expertism etc. Let’s forbid only those few selfish individuals who took MYP for granted ngati kuti kulibe mawa, beating and killing innocent people simply because of jealousy. But for those who indeed dedicated their life to serve, let them get what they sow.

  33. I don’t get it. Who is suppose to compensate them? Who employed them 4rm the beginning? What was the agreement with the employer. Doing good its not a point but why now? What about those pple who were sexually, asulted and harrased in violent way. Are they going to be compansated as well? Let past be past and leave it behind. Civilians sufferd a lot in the hand of these pple. Then lets reopen some cases. My grandpa was beaten by these MYP now we need justice. What compansation do they want actually?

The only prob are jombo ankatidinda nazo zija, nkhuku ankatilanda zija, kutimanga nyakula chifukwa chosavaya kunsonkhano. So tinawakhululukira koma mabala ndiwo akupweteka.   46. Don’t choose the wrong side of MYP ! They did other things wrong yes I get it but on agriculture and promotion of human talents like carpentry/plumbing/wood work /teaching and research they changed the country’s landscape. During those days Malawi had food throughout the year and unemployment rate was minimal I always say had it been that the former President Mr Bakili Muluzi would disarm the group and continue the other side of their good work Malawi wouldn’t be poor the way it is today! Learn to see good things in every situation! My advice to the government: compensate them and open such centres to teach young Malawians their good work that MYP used to do except weapons and and reduce food shortages and unemployment! That’s bull dirty, as far as I’m concerned MYP were senior youth wing of malawi Congress party, they were working and employed by MCP, so if they want compensation they must go to mcp. i remember these green bombers used to throw people in croc dams alive under mcp. never ever try to do that bull…., you just receiveve some donation money for drought and health sector now they’re starting voicing, yooooooo tell them to turn to the right direction, yes i mean to chakwera kabwira & co. com…… zikomo

    2. Davie, if you were civil servants then why are struggling to get terminal benefits? Labours laws are straight forward in respect of exit benefits ie terminal benefits,Davie. Don’t you see that something is not addind up?? When an MDF soldier leave employment, do you think he struggles for terminal benefits like the way you are doing, more than 20 years now!
