Rampant corruption rocks Malawi: Maulana implicated

President Peter Mutharika was forced to effect the dismissal of Ignacio Maulana from his position at the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) after the former army commander opposed a corruption deal involving cabinet ministers and top army officials, it has been claimed.

Maulana was on Saturday redeployed to the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) while Lieutenant General Griffin Supuni was appointed as the new army commander.

Mutharika did not provide any reasons for his decision to sack Maulana.

But a report published by Nyasatimes has implicated the new army commander in a multibillion Kwacha scandal which also involves top officials in Mutharika’s government.

The cabinet ministers have been accused of forcing the Malawi Defence Force to buy 500 trucks from Ashok Leyland. The trucks which were to be supplied by Leyland included top carriers, water bowsers, buses and other military logistic vehicles.

The issue was reported to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) but investigations stallled due to interference from the cabinet ministers.

However Maulana is believed to have opposed the deal from the onset and this incensed the corrupt ministers who hatched up a plan to ensure the dismissal of the army chief.

Supuni who has replaced Maulana at MDF is reported to have been part of the deal and in mid-March this year led other army officials to Capital Hotel in Lilongwe where they met Ashok Leyland representatives and agreed a provisional deal.

Meanwhile political commentators in the country have described the decision to deploy MDF commander to NFRA as strange, saying government should give the real reason for the dismissal.
