District council officials in Malawi have been asked to monitor the Malata, Cement Subsidy programme in order for it to produce intended results.
Chairperson for Parliamentary Committee on Public Infrastructure Victor White Mbewe made the call when his committee visited beneficiaries.
”There is need for district councils to take an active role to make sure that beneficiaries do not receive substandard materials in the program,” said Mbewe.
He further said that councils must make sure that people get materials in time.
The subsidy was launched in 2014 by President Peter Mutharika who warned politicians and chiefs not to politicise the program when identifying beneficiaries.
Mutharika’s government set aside K7 billion Kwacha in 2014 for the construction of decent houses for the poor and 5,440 households are expected to benefit.
Government hopes that the programme will help beneficiaries in rural areas to migrate to iron sheet roofed houses.
