US gay rights envoy to visit Malawi

Malawi will this week receive United States of America Special Envoy for the human rights of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, trans gender and inter-sex (LGBTI) persons.

According to a statement released by US Department of State spokesperson, Special Envoy for the human rights of LGBTI persons, Randy Berry, who is openly gay, will tour Malawi this week.

During his visit, Berry will meet government officials, civil society representatives and members of business, academic, and faith-based communities.

Apart from Malawi, Berry will also visit Namibia, Botswana and South Africa on the same program.

This comes as there is a controversial debate on whether or not to legalise homosexuality in the country.

In December last year, police arrested 19-year-old Cuthbert Kulemera and 33-year-old Kelvin Gonani for allegedly indulging in homosexual acts but they were later released from jail, a development which brought confusion and misunderstanding among government officials, human rights bodies, the clergy and traditional leaders.

The first homosexual couple to come out, Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steve Monjeza, were pardoned by former president Bingu wa Mutharika after a court had given them a 14-year-jail term for the act.

The former president’s decision was believed to have come due to pressure from the then United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon who visited the country at the time.

  14. Although gay rights may not be the most important issue in Malawi, it seems clear from the many hate filled comments on this page that this visit if very neccessary. It is obvious that homosexuals are discriminated upon and hated and this hatred is not warranted. Most homosexuals only want to live their lives in peace. Unfortunately, misunderstandings, religion and just plain predujice have collided to make life a living hell for LGBT people across more than 70 countries in the world which still criminalise homosexuality. I ask you this: what business is it of yours what two consenting adults do with their lives? If you don’t like gay relationships, don’t have one. You do not have the right to tell others how to live their lives. Gay people are your neighbours, your shop owners, your garbage collectors, they are in all areas of life but because of this outdated, BRITISH law that criminalises it, they must live in fear.
