Thirteen people have been rescued by a search team and fishermen from Chizi Fishing Camp from an MV Ubale boat which was Friday afternoon sailing from Likoma Island to Nkhata Bay.
Nkhata Bay Police Spokesperson, Kondwani James confirmed of a missing boat with passengers on board.
“I can confirm that 13 people have been found so far but we could have more as we are still getting reports that others swam to other shores far from Chizi,” said James.
According to James, the boat is suspected to have sunk just after about an hour distance to reach Nkhata Bay.
Spokesperson for Nkhata Bay District Health Office, Christopher Singini said so far eight survivors have been treated as outpatients at Nkhata Bay District Hospital.
Further reports indicate debris from the accident has been spotted on the shores of Thotho along the northern stretch of the lake.
The cause of the accident is yet to be established.
