On this Human Rights Day, President Peter Mutharika has pledged to continue championing rights of Malawians by developing the country and fighting corruption.
In a Human Rights Day statement today, Mutharika has also promised to improve the economy and safeguard the civic space.
Every year on 10th December the world commemorates the International Human Rights Day and this year’s Human Rights Day is under the theme ‘Stand Up for Human Rights’.
In the statement signed by Presidential Press Secretary and Spokesperson Mgeme Kalilani, Mutharika has called on Malawians to stand up for human rights through patriotism, hard work, and integrity saying these are the three pillars of democracy and rights-based and people-centered development.
The Malawi leader has also urged stakeholders to accelerate efforts for promoting and protection of human rights.
“The President wishes to remind all persons that respect for human rights is central to the consolidation of our democratic governance.
“President Mutharika also reminds all Malawians the importance of exercising our responsibilities as we enjoy our rights. There is no justification for violating other people’s rights in the exercise of one’s rights,” says the statement.
The Malawi leader in the statement observes that accountability is key to the promotion and protection of human rights. He then calls for collective accountability where both the private sector and other non-state actors have the moral and legal responsibility to demonstrate accountability to Malawians.
