The main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has refuted claims that its Director of Youth Peter Chankhwantha has resigned from his position.
There were claims on social media that Chankhwantha resigned from his position during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) held over a week ago in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe.
Malawi24 caught up with MCP Publicist Secretary Ezekiel Ching’oma who has refuted the claims.
Ching’oma said he attended the NEC meeting but no one announced that he had resigned.
“I was there in this said NEC meeting but I did not hear anyone resigning,” Ching’oma told Malawi24.
Over a week ago, MCP had a NEC meeting where it resolved to fire and suspend some of its top officials for bringing confusions in the party.
The party fired Salima lawmaker Jessie Kabwila and suspended its Vice President Richard Msowoya as well as Secretary General Gustav Kaliwo.
The senior members were however granted an injunction by the High Court in Blantyre which means they are still party members.
Political analysts in the country have warned the Malawi’s oldest party of intra-fighting saying such issues may compromise its preparations ahead of 2019 elections.
By continuing to speak for MCP, Ching’oma is in contempt of court, which through injunction, reinstated the genuine spokesperson of the party, Jessie Kabwira.
