Police officer jailed for stealing

The Dedza First Grade Magistrate court has sentenced a police officer to two and a half years in prison for stealing a motorbike.

State prosecutor Superintendent Patrick Chambuluka told the court that Constable Richard Nangwiri stole a Rico motorcycle at a bar within the boma. Court

“On 26 January 2016, he stole a motorcycle and on 27 January he was involved in an accident with the same stolen motorbike. He hit a pedal cyclist and he was taken to police where he was arrested for theft,” Chambuluka told the court.

Nangwiri pleaded not guilty but the state proved beyond reasonable doubt and he was convicted.

In mitigation, he asked the court for leniency saying he has a family that he looks after.

First Grade Magistrate Symon Mwambo said the officer showed bad character that was not supposed to be shown by a police officer. He then sentenced the officer to two years and six months in prison.

Nangwiri was already on interdiction at work as he is answering two other cases of stealing money and a bicycle belonging to a fellow police officer.

He joined Malawi Police Service in 2002 and comes from Maleta village, Traditional Authority Kadewere in Chiradzulu.
