Machinga Second Grade Magistrate Court on Thursday fined a 42-year-old bus driver K130,000 for being found in possession of cannabis.
According to the district’s Malawi police publicist, Constable Davie Sulumba, the convict has been identified as Lovemore Chausi.
Sulumba said prosecutor Sub Inspector Rodrick Kamuoma based at Machinga Police station told the court that on July 6 police officers were on checkpoint at Machinga police roadblock.
It is reported that in course of their duty, a Matours Bus registration number MN 3698 which was traveling from Mzuzu to Blantyre via Zomba driven by the suspect arrived at the checkpoint.
According to Sulumba, after checking in it the officers found two laptop bags which were under the drivers’ seat and packed in the bags were four packs of cannabis sativa, two in each bag wrapped in plastic bags and weighing 12 kilograms.
When the driver was interviewed about the weed he denied knowing the owner of the bags and he was immediately arrested.
In court, the driver pleaded not guilty and the state paraded two witnesses.
After being found guilty, he prayed for fair punishment saying he is a breadwinner looking after children and a granny.
Prosecutor Kamuoma further asked the court to impose stiff penalty to the convict for he is contributing to misconduct of people.
When passing judgement, his worship Second Grade Magistrate Maxwell Boazi concurred with the state saying the act was in conflict with regulation 4, Section 19, of Dangerous Drugs Act
Boazi therefore fined the driver K130,000 or in default 10 months imprisonment with hard labour.
The cannabis sativa was burnt to ashes soon after court hearing.
