Malawi President Peter Mutharika has expressed disappointment and anger at the turn of events at the Bingu National Stadium following the death of eight people in a stampede.

Mutharika visited victims of the stampede

Mutharika went to Kamuzu Central Hospital after prayers where among others he cheered those injured from the stampede and paid his respects to those killed.

Mutharika who was joined by the first lady and the Vice President Saulos Chilima at the hospital expressed his heartfelt condolences to the affected families.

Mutharika then spoke on the need for authorities to make sure that such a tragedy should not happen again.

“Authorities should make sure that this does not happen again. These are modern facilities with the ability to accommodate a number of people,” said Mutharika.

Eight people have died in the stampede of which there were six boys, a girl and a man.

In light of the tragedy, Mutharika cancelled his attendance of the football match at the stadium where Big Bullets beat Silver Strikers by 2 goals to one.

  106. we want action.somebody should be responsible. be fired and arrested to warn these people to provide good services. we dont want bad planners in our country sir.fire them out of public service.how can they delay the opening of the stadium up to 10 am holding thousands and thousands outside and in the end people scrambled to get inside causing a stampede. what we expected was the opening of the gates at 5 am .once the intended number reached then police could have sealed the gates and disallow people to come near the first gates. road blocks at Gulliver mtandire as well as 18b junction to prevent more people going to stadium but our dear police in military gear amassed at the facility with guns as if there is an imminent war.somebody with a gun can not control crowds. how ? give them batton sticks and strategic guns in case there is need.today we cry for our beautiful boys for gross negligence of our police
