Dust refuses to settle on wrangles surrounding government’s decision to build a community technical college at Nkhatabay boma rather than Tukombo as earlier planned.
The issue has taken a new twist as communities surrounding Tukombo are demanding explanation from authorities on the matter.
Reports show that locals stormed the Nkhatabay District Commissioner’s office this week, demanding reasons for relocation.
“They were suspecting that maybe the DC was behind the decision. So they went there to seek for clarification on the whole issue,” said the source. One of the concerned residents of Tukombo, James Banda, told our reporter recently that government has betrayed the people of Nkhatabay south by relocating the college to the Boma.
“The announcement was that the colleges will be placed in all constituencies and now we are surprised to see them relocating one of the colleges from here to the Boma, I think government is running out of ideas,” he said.
Legislator for Nkhatabay south, Chinthu Banda, also described the move as worrisome, as government has shown that it is good at playing with the minds of Malawians.
He hinted on investigating the issue to establish the real reasons behind the decision.
“Even when they come with armed police, we were surprised. It was a war like atmosphere. To us it was very astounding and worrisome,” said Banda.
District commissioner for Nkhatabay, Alex Mdooko, distanced himself from the matter saying his office was not responsible for the issue.
When asked about the issue, Minister of Labour, youth and manpower development Henry Mussa asked for ample time to respond on the matter.
