A truck loaded with bags of fertilizer caught fire yesterday, November 22 at Lusangazi in the city of Mzuzu.
According to deputy police publicist in the city, Cecilia Mfune, the truck registration number NB 304 belonging to Tiyenkhu transport, was coming from Lilongwe and was heading to Mzimba north.
Mfune said the driver Brechson Khonyolo, 44 said as he was on his way to Mzimba, the truck’s trailer started binding upon reaching the scene a development that resulted into flames of his truck.
The publicist said that the truck boarded over 600 bags of fertilizer and according to her 378 bags amongst the population, has been rescued.
She added that some well wishers in conjunction with the police tried their level best to completely put off the fire but to no avail. She continued saying calculations are still in progress to find the exact number burnt bags and also the actual amount of money lost but she confirmed no one has died or injured on the accident.
According to her, preliminary results has shown that the bags into flames is mounting to K12 million and the rescued bags were worth K9 million respectively and all bags were adding to K22 million.
Meanwhile, the police said investigations are still underway to establish the main cause of the fire and the exact amount of the bags destroyed.
The driver, Brechson Khonyolo hails from Chiahaha Khonyolo village in the area of Traditional Authority Mthwaro in Mzimba district.
