The Zomba Chief Resident Magistrate Court has sentenced a 45 year-old man to 120 years in prison for raping six girls on several occasions.

The rapist however will only serve 20 years as the sentences will run concurrently.

The man identified as Davie Kagonegone raped the girls whose ages range from five to seven on several occasions between January and July this year.

Eastern Region police prosecutor Dickens Mwambazi told the court that the abuse happened at Chirombo village, Traditional Authority Nankumba in the district of Mangochi.

Mwambazi said the sexual abuse was revealed on 20th July, 2016 when one of the girls’ father found the paedophile caressing his daughter’s private parts.

“Upon being quizzed the girl told his father that the convict had been defiling her together with other five girls one after another several times in his house and were given dried fish (kanyenya) as payment and ordered not to reveal the abuse to anyone,” Mwambazi said.

The issue was reported to Monkey-Bay police post and the girls were referred to Monkey-Bay Community Hospital where medical reports confirmed that all six had been raped.

The rapist was arrested and charged with six counts of defilement of girls under the age of 18 contrary to section 138 (1) of penal code.

He denied the charges but prosecution paraded 13 witnesses and he was convicted.

In mitigation the convict asked court to be lenient as he has a family to look after.
