…ineffective procurement committee faulted
Lack of a vibrant internal procurement committee at Chikhwawa district council has been singled out as a huge factor making public officers to connive with communities to embezzle millions of funds meant for development.
This was disclosed during a full council meeting in the district where it was revealed that over K130 Million meant for the implementation of different projects in Chikhwawa has been embezzled.
During 2016/2016 fiscal year, government provided the district with money for the implementation of projects but out of the 17 projects under District Development Fund (DDF), only 11 have been implemented.
The development has raised eyebrows among councillors, Traditional Leaders and Members of Parliament who asked the council to set up a commission of inquiry in order to trace the missing millions of kwachas.
Meanwhile, District Commissioner Bester Mandere says he has re-organized the internal procurement committee in order to make realistic plans and be transparent in the management of various development projects.
The incident comes few days after K70 Million money generated through revenue collection at the same council was also reported to be missing.
