A 11 year-old girl who has been identified as Efiness Lawless has died after drowning in a river in Nkhotakota district.
The incident occurred last Sunday on 2nd October, 2016 in Msinje Okumbaimbe village in the district.
According to the father of the deceased, Mr Lawless, his daughter died while she was together with her five friends.
Mr Lawless said Efiness and her friends went to a river to extract clay soil as ordered by their teachers at school. In the course of extracting the soil, the child slipped and drowned into the river.
Later the girls informed their parents to try to rescue Efiness but their efforts did not save the child’s life. Postmortem results revealed that death occurred due to suffocation.
