Malawian man commits suicide for being HIV positive

HIV testIt certainly is not a death sentence but it appears a man from Dedza in Central Malawi could just not accept that one can live a full life despite their HIV status.

Information that Malawi24 has indicates that a 44 year-old man on Saturday hanged himself to death in his house days after being tested HIV positive.

The man has been identified as Gerald Phiri.

Police said that Phiri felt sick on 12 August and he went to Golomoti Health Centre where he was tested HIV positive.

“Since being tested HIV positive the deceased has been unhappy,” police said.

On Saturday, the depression got the better of him and he decided to hang himself in his house.

Post-mortem conducted revealed that the death was caused due to strangulation and police say they are not suspecting any foul play over the death.

The deceased hailed from Chagunda village, in the area of Traditional Authority Kachindamoto in Dedza district.
