Fire police officers who tortured Chanco students

Former ruling People’s Party (PP) has written the Inspector General of police asking for the firing of the police officer who was captured beating female Chancellor College (Chanco) students.

A video has gone viral on social media showing a police officer beating female Chanco students as the scholars were demonstrating against fees hike.

According to PP spokesperson, Ken Msonda, this is a very worrisome development and he said the officers must be disciplined.

Msonda said their party is saddened to see authorities who were supposed to protect the students beating them.

“Actually what the police at Chanco have done is a very worrisome development. It is very unfortunate that we still have some police officers who want to tarnish the good image of the police.”

“We have a video clip which is exposing some officer slapping female students at the institution which is not a good development considering the academic freedom and we have sent that video to the inspector General of the police. We want those officers fired,” said Msonda.

He further backed the girls by saying that they were innocent, were unarmed, and were practicing their rights.

The PP spokesperson expressed optimism that the Inspector General will accept their request having in mind that it is a constitutional right to demonstrate hence the students were not supposed to be beaten.

Concurring with Msonda was the Executive director for Centre for Human Rights Education, Advice and Assistance (CHREAA) Victor Mhango who said the officers need to be answerable for their conduct and said they should be prosecuted as individuals not police officers.

This Police Reform project should also allow the men & women in uniform to reason & not just follow orders from above. Imagine the Poly situation; students were in an Assembly, discussing how to engage the appropriate authorities on the issue at hand, then someone, driven not by his reasonability but by orders from above disperses the students by teargas, captures a good number of them & keeps them in a cell & refuses to grant them exit on bail, all because of orders from above… Here Police is not maintaining order, it is the order (from above) which is maintaining the Police, making them conduct themselves inhumanly.
