Police at Ndirande Township in Blantyre city have arrested a 37 year-old man for being found with Indian hemp locally known as “Chamba”.
According to police, the suspect Francis Khoza was arrested after he was found with Indian hemp weighing 300 kgs in a vehicle registration number KU 1751 on Thursday.
Confirming to Malawi24, Blantyre police deputy spokesperson Andrew Mayawo said the officers had a tip about the suspect who was packing the Indian hemp to sell it outside the city.
“The suspect was packing the illegal stuff at Makata and people of goodwill tipped the police who managed to stop his vehicle when he was about to leave Blantyre,” said Mayawo.
Mayawo added that the police have since sent the Indian hemp to Bvumbwe Research station as part of investigations on the matter.
The suspect comes from Mataka village, in Blantyre and he is yet to appear in court.
