Malawi President Peter Mutharika has said his government will construct a new stadium in the commercial city.

Mutharika said this during the official opening of the upgraded Masauko Chipembere Highway in Blantyre on Saturday.

“Ndimanga stadium ya pamwamba mu mzinda wa Blantyre, (I will build a magnificent stadium in Blantyre),” Mutharika said.

Currently, most Blantyre based teams use Kamuzu Stadium as their home ground and the stadium also hosts Malawi national team games. Construction of a new stadium in Blantyre will therefore ease pressure on Kamuzu Stadium.

In 2009, the Bingu Wa Mutharika administration secured a multi-billion loan from China for construction of a new stadium in Lilongwe which has since been finalized.

Government named it the Bingu Stadium and it is expected to be opened in April this year.

Among other things, Mutharika also said that his government wants to see Blantyre change for the better as he said that he will also construct a five star hotel in the commercial city.

“I want to see a new Blantyre among other things I will also build a five star hotel in Blantyre,” he said.

    2. This is de only reason i have a problem with some people from de north. Every single project taking place in de south is linked to regionalism and tribalism. There are some gud folks there who look things with sober minds. There are a stadium projects taking place in Rumphi and Karonga but some are against them for their unknown reasons. Why do we want to create tension when there is no nid for it? Mzuzu is in Malawi and it doesn’t mean that all the facilities in Mzuzu are benefiting the northern part of Malawi only. The same applies to de Central and South. Stop this u guys!

Mzuzu in recent past had two teams its only now where a third team will participate in TNM. Nevertheless,I believe northern part of our country also deserves a stadium of international standard this should be after Blantyre.
