Mutharika orders arrests on murders of the elderly in Neno

Malawi President Peter Mutharika has condemned the murder of four senior citizens by a mob in Neno.

In a statement signed by his press officer, Gerald Viola, the president says he is saddened by the brutal acts of the villagers in Chimbalanga Village.

Mutharika further said that he has ordered the Inspector General of the Malawi Police to investigate the matter and bring to justice and trial all people involved in the killing of the four innocent citizens.

The Malawi leader has since advised people in the country to desist from accusing the elderly whenever someone dies and has warned that his government will not tolerate any victimization of elderly people in the country.

On Monday, a mob murdered the elderly people after suspecting that the four had killed 17 year-old Flora Kanjete.

Police in the district identified the four as Eliza Ennosi Kanjete (86), Elenefa Kanjete (76), Byson Kanjete (73), and Idesi Julius Kanjete (69). They all hailed from Chimbalanga village, Traditional Authority Dambe in Neno

So far no one has been arrested in connection with the brutal killings and police in Neno says they are still investigating the murders.
