Malawi Police in Zomba are keeping in custody 23 year-old Batumeo Mcheka for attempting to kill his own child.
The accused was arrested after his wife, Eliza Lakesi, reported that he was trying to remove the baby’s umbilical cord using a needle.
According to police, Mcheka’s wife heard the baby crying while it was with her husband in their house. At that time, the mother was in a garden outside the house.
The woman then decided to go and find out what was going on with the child. When she went into the house she checked the baby and realised that its umbilical cord had been pierced with a needle.
She rushed with the baby to Matiya Health Centre where health workers confirmed that the baby had been pierced with a sewing needle. The woman reported the matter to Jali Police Station and police officers arrested the suspect.
At the station, the suspect disclosed that he wanted to kill the child with the needle after he was advised by a witchdoctor that doing so will quickly make him rich.
Mcheka has been charged with attempted murder and he hails from Mwanapiye Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwambo in the district.
