Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President Goodall Gondwe had to be reminded of the name of President Peter Mutharika’s runningmate.
During a rally at Mchengautuba in Mzuzu, Gondwe – who is also Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development – struggled to recall the name of Mutharika’s runningmate in the 2019 elections Everton Chimulirenji.
“A Peter woyeee, a Peter woyee…bala ba runningmate ayime nawo…woyee… zina lawo nkhulimanya chomene cha … [I don’t know his name well],” Gondwe said.
The minister however backed Mutharika for his choice of Chimulirenji as the DPP runningmate in the 2019 elections.
“To me, Peter Mutharika is a very wise person. I have stayed with him for over 60 years since our school days. If he chooses him [Chimulirenji], I know it is a wise choice. I will support the choice and I ask people here to support it,” Gondwe said.
President Mutharika announced the appointment of Chimulirenji as his runningmate in the May, 2019 tripartite elections in Blantyre earlier this month during presentation of nomination papers for presidential aspirants to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
