Buses keep operating at night despite government ban

Though the Malawi government placed an order stopping buses from operating at night, the ban is being ignored by operators.

The government of Malawi through the minister of transport and public works, Jappie Mhango ordered that no bus should be found operating on the road after 22:00 hours.

The minister said the command which was with immediate effect, was placed in order to reduce road accidents which hit the country.

The government through Mhango said it was shocked with the rise in number of road accidents which were reported almost on a daily basis in the month of June.

However, despite government’s order, Malawi24 can confidently report that these buses are still operating after 10 PM.

In an interview with this reporter, one Malawian confirmed that he boarded one of the well-known buses from Blantyre at around 21:30 to Lilongwe where they arrived at around 2 AM.

“Yes it is true, these buses are still operating after 22:00 defying government’s order on the matter.

“I can confirm that on Monday July 24 I boarded a night compost bus from Blantyre to Lilongwe and along the way, we met other buses operating as well which means the order is being neglected,” said the traveller in a telephone interview.

Meanwhile, government is yet to react on whether the ban is still working or was vacated.

  1. Government “must” do their Home work well cos despite the ban, the “main” reason Buses are involved in accidents is overspeeding. I was shocked a week ago while driving to Blantyre, at a steady 100 km/h that I went passed SOSOSO Bus at Senzani Stage until it was out of sight on my View Mirror but in less than 5 minutes it appeared, overtook me & disappeared in seconds. More surprising, I still didn’t catchup with it at Zalewa Road Block till I got Blantyre through the Magalasi Road.

Wat matters is the condition of the bus,the driver,the road n the the road trafficers.travelling at night ain’t a vuto at all since accidents are not specifically made for night travellers.even during the day,is the worse of accidents.therz no specific time for accidents oh.so ah banning doesn’t make sense at all.

  4. Rather it should passengers to be banned from travelling by night …..because the bus owners cannot operate without passengers onboard…..
    Make things straight.
    It’s not traveling by night which causes accidents.
    Improve the roads infrastructure.
    And let the traffic police do their job without bribes and corruption… period!

    Ban overloading of buses and mini buses and ensure that they are road worth.

  8. Some laws maybe lawless and useless bro, check this out. For example here in BT they tell us to get off the minibus when it’s refuelling and yet they allow us to stand an inch near the pump and the refuelling bus. Nonsense no logic

  12. one of my gud friends who have had a short stay in japan said it is difcot for an african to find a job in japan bcoz most africans are believed to be gud at sleeping and in bed. is it fair to shut down the engine of malawi^s economy the whole night? forcing everybody in bed? bus operators belong to the private sector and the private setor is the engine for economic growth. shuting down the engine may suffocate the gross domestic products (GDP) posibly the authorities will revisit the whole issue by among other things assessing the effects of such a curfew.   20. I hope we rushed in coming up with this directive that buses should not travel at night. It was to find out why buses travel at night. If this ban is put into effect then Malawi will be the first country in the world to implement this and will suffer the consequences very soon. For example from Karonga to Blantyre, I don’t think this long distance can only be covered within day light. If buses discontinue the journey after 10pm, it will be expensive to the commuters and even to the the company. We also need to appreciate that people have different reasons that make them travel at night and delaying them with such a ban will affect them economically and socially.

    We need to explore better ways of reducing accidents on our roads with a sober minds. Most of the accidents happen during day time and not at night. Lets find the root causes of these accidents and put corrective measures without penalizing innocent people. Buses travel day and night from Malawi to South Africa but they rarely have accidents.

    The problem with us is that we rush at giving solutions without determining the impacts to the nation and even ordinary people.
