Machinga First Grade Magistrate Court on Monday sentenced a 43-year-old man to 14 years in jail for raping a 56-year-old woman and robbing her of household items and money.
Machinga police publicist Davie Sulumba identified the convict as Lucius Unga Katimbe.
According to Sulumba, state prosecutor Richard Kandeya told Machinga court which was sitting at Liwonde court that Katimbe committed the crime on the night of 11th February, 2017.
It is reported that the victim was sleeping alone in her house when she heard breaking sound.
Two men, Katimbe and another one identified as Koloko, then entered the house. They threatened the woman with a panga knife and then tied her hands and legs using pieces of a chitenje cloth.
The two stole four pieces of chitenje clothes, 5 litres of cooking oil, two bags of maize and K7,400 cash, both cash and items valued at K45,000.
Before leaving the house the two men raped the woman.
The victim identified the rapists since they are members of the same community and she reported them to Nselema police post.
Police later arrested Katimbe and charged him with two charges of robbery and rape which are contrary to sections 301 and 133 of the penal code respectively. His accomplice however is still at large.
In court, Katimbe denied all the charges which made the state to parade three witnesses to prove the matter beyond reasonable doubt.
After Katimbe was found guilty, prosecutor Kandeya asked the court to impose a stiff punishment to the convict for he committed serious offences and the items he stole were not recovered.
In mitigation the convict prayed for fair punishment for he is a first offender.
His worship First Grade Magistrate Jones Masula then sentenced the convict to 14 years in jail for each offence saying the sentences will run concurrently.
The convict hails from Mtutile village, Traditional Authority Nyambi in Machinga District.
