…as Blue Eagles are beaten
The race for the 2016 Super League championship took another turn on Saturday afternoon when defending champions Big Bullets battered relegation bound Max Bullets 3-nil to move up to second in the standings.
Mussa Manyenje gave Bullets a half time lead before Diverson Mlozi and Chiukepo Msowoya’s second half strikes completely buried Maxwell Kapanda’s side’s hopes of making a comeback into the game.
From kick off, the defending champions were all over the rookies but Msowoya and Mlozi were lacking the cutting edge in the penalty box.
While Ernest Kakhobwe in goals for Bullets was having a day off as he was hardly threatened, his opposite number Maxwell Dowa was having a nightmare as his mistake from Msowoya’s shot allowed Manyenje to make a cool finish.
The rookies then brought in Mayeso Mphanje for the ineffective Thoko Mbandambanda who was fond of losing possession in midfield.
Moments later, Msowoya’s volley was well saved by Dowa before he produced another save to deny Henry Kabichi from doubling the visitors’ lead.
At the other end, Mapopa Kaunda’s header was ruled out for offside by referee Alfred Kaphathengo and it was 1-nil in favor of Bullets at half time.
When the teams emerged from the tunnel after break, Kabichi had been substituted for Anzeru Joseph for the People’s team.
Few minutes after recess, Bullets doubled their lead through Mlozi whose low drive was led into the net by Dowa, 2-0.
The goal angered Aubrey Nankhuni who introduced Carrington Misomali for Dowa and Yamikani Osman for Frank Kadam’manja.
The change brought some rhythm in Max Bullets’ midfield as Osman and Mphanje tormented Bullets’ defence in search for goals.
However, Msowoya completely buried the match when he scored a rebound from a penalty he missed and after 90 minutes of play, it ended 3-0 in favor of Big Bullets who rose up to second in the standings with 39 points, just a point behind leaders Silver Strikers.
As for the rookies, they are slowly exiting the league as they are anchoring the standings with 8 points from 20 games.
At Zomba Community Centre Ground, Blue Eagles’ title ambitions were dealt a massive blow when they lost 2-1 to Red Lions.
The result sees the Area 30 based side winless in their five second round matches and they are now fourth in the standings with 36 points from 20 games.
As for the Zomba based Soldiers, the latest win has moved them into 11th position with 25 points from 21 games.
Action continues on Sunday, with Moyale Barracks playing host to Mafco FC at Mzuzu Stadium while Wizards FC will entertain Blue Eagles at Kamuzu Stadium.
At Civo Stadium, Kamuzu Barracks will welcome Mighty Wanderers and on Monday, Dwangwa United will host Civo United at Chitowe Stadium.
In other Monday matches, Epac FC will host Silver Strikers at Civo Stadium while Karonga United will entertain Mzuni FC, with Big Bullets hosting Red Lions at Kamuzu Stadium.
