The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has asked government to make sure that there will be no job losses at Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) when the company splits into two.
MCP Member of Parliament (MP) for Kasungu West Alex Major made the statement after parliament passed the Electricity Bill that will see Escom being split into two companies.
Meja commended parliament for passing the bill but he advised government to avoid job losses due to the ‘unbundling’ of the electricity supplier.
Commenting on the development, People’s Party publicist on energy Welani Chilenga said the bill is very important to the development of the country since it will resolve the electricity challenges Malawians are facing.
On his part, Minister of Natural Resources, Energy, and Mining Bright Msaka said the new law will enable government to bring some independent companies which will produce more power.
He said 34 independent power generating companies will come into the country and join the private sector.
The new law means that Escom will now been divided into two entitles; one will focus on power generation while the other will focus on supplying the power.
Olo atawachosa poti palibe kusiyana kulikonse magesi amangozima zima ife tinalipila kalekale kuti atiikile magesi mpaka one year munthu ukudikila magesi ndiye wina aziti ntchito zisathe za ziieee za mkutu
Every new initiative comes with problems, expect more pple to lose jobs,a good example z meter readers, what do u think they’ll be doing after this prepaid meter installation the whole cntry?we need advanced things but know that it will be impacting on us and we can’t run away from this.85% of human working force will lose out to technologically introduced machine and we’v to accept this.
Tell them, aiwala kuti tinali ndi post office ndi ma ground phone, kubwera kwa maphone am’manja ena ntchito zinatha the same with this escom issue
