The United States Embassy in Malawi has said it appreciates the efforts of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) following the arrest of Vice President Saulos Chilima.
Chilima was arrested today after being interrogated at ACB offices over allegations that he received K290 milllion bribe from businessperson Zuneth Sattar.
In a statement, the US Embassy has said it appreciates the efforts of the ACB to investigate and pursue accountability for cases of corruption.
“This requires courage and commitment to the rule of law. These cases are a matter for the Malawians judicial system, and we encourage a fair, transparent and expedient process by the courts for all those accused of crimes,” reads part of the statement.
The US Embassy has since urged the Malawi Government to continue efforts to address the issue of corruption by identifying, prosecuting and punishing all those who engage in corrupt practices regardless of political affiliation.
The Embassy in the statement has expressed its commitment to continue supporting Malawi’s fight against corruption.
Meanwhile, Chilima who has been charged with six counts related to corruption, has been granted bail today after appearing before the magistrate’s in Lilongwe.
