The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services with assistance from International Organisations for Migration (IOM) will this week repatriate 344 Ethiopian nationals who were being held in various prison facility for violating immigration laws.
This is according to the department’s national public relations officer Inspector Pasqually Zulu who said these are Ethiopian nationals who got arrested for committing various immigration offences.
Inspector Zulu saidthe excise which will be done in two phases will assist in decogesting the country’s prisons amid food shortage, Covid-19 and Cholera outbreaks.
The publicist further indicated that the excise has started on Wednesday 2nd November with a total of 156 Ethiopian nationals being repatriated using a chartered plane through Kamuzu international Airport in Lilongwe.
He continued to say that the second phase of the exercise will be done on Thursday November 4th with another total of 188 Ethiopian nationals departing for their country, Ethiopia.Zulu then admitted that theillegal entry of irregular migrants specifically from Great Lakes Region and Horn of Africa who uses Malawi as a transit route, remains a challenge to the country’s Immigration Department despite its tireless efforts to stop the vice.
