A 34-year-old woman has died while three children have sustained injuries after being struck by lightning in Ntcheu.
The incident happened on Thursday at Zakutchire Village in Traditional Authority (TA) Kwataine in Ntcheu.
According to Ntcheu Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Rebecca Ndiwate, the deceased has been identified as Fatsireni Kadammanja, while the injured children are Alfred Kamundi, 4, Alpha Kanyangale, 8, and Asha Masina, 7.
Ndiwate said Kadammanja was at her usual business shelter, selling fried potatoes, locally known as zigege, while it was raining.
“While at her business place, lightning struck injuring Kadammanja and the three children who were seeking shelter at the place.
“The four were taken to Ntcheu District Hospital, where Kadammanja was pronounced dead, while the children are receiving treatment at the health facility,” said Ndiwate.
Postmortem conducted by medical personnel from Ntcheu District Hospital certified that death was due to cardiogenic electric shock.
As a precautionary measure, police in the district are advising the public not to seek shelter under trees whenever it is raining.
