Malawians not amused: demand Dausi to resign

Minister of Homeland Security Nicholas Dausi has apologised for his remarks on the killings and abductions of persons with albinism.

In a statement today, the minister said he has noted that the remarks which he made have caused a lot of pain and discomfort in some sections of society as well as to persons with albinism.

“As such I have decided to unconditionally apologise for the remarks and hence I withdraw them,” Dausi said.

The minister added that  he truly regrets that the true meaning he had intended at that briefing did not come out as it was and he is personally concerned.

He then said under instructions from Malawi president Peter Mutharika, his ministry is working tirelessly to make sure that the barbaric act is put to rest immediately.

Last week Dausi said at a news conference that the attacks on persons with albinism have not yet reached a crisis level.

His sentiments followed an announcement by he Association of Persons with Albinism that it will hold vigils at State House. The association also demanded government to allow persons with albinism to seek asylum in other countries.

A video clip with Dausi remarks went viral on social media attracting wrath of many Malawians and several authorities asked for his resignation.

“When they say they want to seek asylum elsewhere, do they want to insult government? Seriously? If they [Apam] are listening to us, will they insult government? These are things coming from homes where parents are selling their biological kids and they say we are facing challenges here?” Dausi said.

Meanwhile, Malawians say Dausi’s apology is not enough and they want the minister to step down from his post.

“Well, too little too late… Resign he must. Then we shall know he means business,” said one Malawian.

“I am concerned wh It took him so long to apologise. He hasn’t resigned. The president hasn’t fired him as a minister First things first. Achoke pa u minister so that someone who really cares about our security can come in. Waiting for the president to do the needful. Trust has been breached,” Mimie Mimie said.

While Prefect Bon Idriss Mwitha said: “The best apology is to resign Mr Dausi. You have failed us as a country.
