Linthipe accident claims 3 lives


Three people died while several others suffered injuries after a truck hit a minibus on Friday night at Linthipe in Dedza.

Dedza police deputy publicist Cassim Manda said the accident occurred on Friday at around 8pm at Linthipe 3 Bridge in the district and involved a truck and a minibus.

According to Manda, John Sou of the Freightliner truck MC 3461/CK 2270 was driving from the direction of Dedza heading towards Lilongwe side, along M1 road.

Upon arrival at Linthipe 3 Bridge, due to speeding, the truck hit the rear part of Toyota Hiace number KK 4835 which was also heading towards the same direction.

The truck swerved to the offside of the road where it collided head on with another motor vehicle registration number MJ 7295 Isuzu van which was coming from opposite direction.

Following the impact, Matiyasi Marko, 24, of Mkwekwere village in the area of Traditional Authority Kalembo in Balaka district sustained severe internal injury and died on the spot.

Mike Jabu, 16, of Kawanga village in the area of traditional authority Kalembo in Balaka also sustained severe head injury and died on the spot while Mr Thom from the Isuzu whose full particulars are not known died whilst receiving treatment.

Hiace driver Peter Mlenga sustained fracture whereas John Sou (Truck driver) sustained hip dislocation. Thirteen passengers escaped with minor injuries.

In a related incident, on Wednesday a vehicle belonging to Dedza district hospital hit to death a 9 year old boy at Wilson village along Magomero-Mikondo earth road in the district as the driver was avoiding head on collision with a motorcyclist.
