Woman dies after car collides with bicycle

A 40-year-old woman identified as Helen Phiri died on Tuesday after a bicycle she was travelling on collided with a car.

According to Mzuzu police deputy publicist Cecilia Mfune, at around 6AM the driver of a Toyota Passo registration number BU 8255 was coming from Mzuzu City towards Mchengautuwa direction with two passengers on board.

Upon reaching Reserve Bank in the city, the car collided with the bicycle on which the woman was a pillion passenger.

Due to the impact, the woman sustained head injuries and internal bleeding and she died upon arrival at Mzuzu Central Hospital.

The cyclist also sustained head injuries and had a fracture on his right leg. He was taken to Mzuzu Central Hospital where he has been admitted.

The driver and the passengers escaped with no injuries and the driver also ran away from the scene of the crash leaving the car behind.

Police have since impounded the vehicle and are hunting for the driver.
