Junior Flames leave today for Cosafa

Malawi Under-17

The Malawi Under-17 national football team leaves the country this morning with focus on winning the Cosafa Youth Championship in Mauritius.

The Junior Flames, who last won the championship as hosts in 2001, are looking forward to improving on their last year’s outing in Port Louis, Mauritius where they finished third.

Coach Dekreck Msakakuwona told www.fam.mw that his troops, who have been in camp for three weeks, are in good shape to conquer Cosafa.

He however said the boys should not be put under pressure with targets.

“The training camp went well and we are looking forward to the tournament. We have young and talented players who are hungry for success.

“When a farmer plants cotton for sure he wants to harvest cotton and not maize. We want to go there and do well. “It is my wish as a coach, the wish of the boys and the wish of the nation to win this cup,” said Msakakuwona

Only three players in the squad, captain Haji Walli, Innocent Nhlema and Chikondi Mbeta, were part of the group that won bronze last year.

The Junior Flames are in group A alongside hosts Mauritius, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

They play their opening game against Botswana on Saturday before facing Zimbabwe on Monday. The last group match is against Mauritius on Wednesday.

  2. We always want to reap where we do not sow…. Poor preparations hinders Flames team to clinch trophy whenever we participate in tournaments….. Let us invest the beautiful game of football by giving enough training deemed fit to enable our goals reach greater heights. Having played football though not to the better part of it. I have this concrete feeling that we would not prosper if we don’t follow proper processes and procedures of managing the game in and outside the field. The time is now let us change for the better.

    1. You know Annubie Junad Bonzo it’s frustrating looking at the motivational factor as well as preparations of the players physically and mentally.Yet we have great talent that can yield better crop.
